On the Plate

Nutrition Services at Springfield Public Schools is partnering with local farms and farmers markets to put fresh, local food on students' plates. Children are learning the value of healthy eating while supporting our local economy and family farms. The students have added their own freshly grown produce from the school gardens onto the menu in the cafeteria at numerous school sites. Our gardens typically grow fast growing, cool season crops due to the timing of the school year and the typical growing season. Our main focuses are on lettuces, greens, roots, peas and flowers. Our students love to try interesting new vegetables that are not typically seen in the grocery store.

The famous quote rings true to our experiences with our students.

"WHEN KIDS GROW KALE, KIDS EAT KALE"

-Ron Finley, LA Guerrilla Gardener
